Weather Forecast

We currently have 10-12 inches of snow on the ground in the wooded areas near Lake Placid. Less cover near Saranac Lake, and much less in Keene. In Lake Placid, there is a firm crust with 3-4 inches of settled powder on top. Open areas have less snow, and a few have had the powder blown off, leaving just crust for a surface. Generally though, conditions are good, although they would have been better had we received the predicted 3-4 inches. Instead, we only got about one inch Monday night, and now no new snow is forecast for the rest of the week. Temperatures will remain at seasonal normals for this time of year. Given these stable conditions, the next update will be on FRIDAY, 2/12.

Comments: Entire trail skiable with good cover in the wooded areas. Very thin cover in the meadow along River Road and some bare spots on both Craig Wood and Lake Placid Club golf courses, but all are crossable. Additionally, there are some minor washouts on the Lake Placid side of the Old Mt. Road section, but all can be easily crossed or bypassed.

Backcountry Conditions:
Snow Depth at Lake Colden: 23 inches
Snow Depth at 4,000 ft.: 4-5 feet
Surface Conditions: powder
Comments: All popular routes have generally good cover. Hiking trail approach to Marcy Dam has developed some thin and worn spots with recent traffic, but remains skiable. Old trail the preferred route. Best, if longer, skiing approach to Marcy Dam is via the truck trail. Lake ice on Avalanche and Lake Colden safe, but be very aware of thin spots near outlets and especially inlets. Lake Road to Lower Ausable Lake is very thin for the first 1/4 mile or so, but has skiable cover after that. Snowshoes or skis required in the High Peaks.
