Every sportsman knows that few things beat the thrill of landing a “trophy” trout. That’s why our innovative program was developed - to raise and release about 30,000 two-year old trout, ranging in size from 12” to 16”, into the waters of Essex County each year. Most trout culture programs focus on raising 7” to 9” yearlings, but in 1990, an aggressive transition was initiated at our facility to significantly increase the size of the fish released into local streams, ponds and lakes.

This initiative has resulted in a more exciting and challenging fishing experience for local and visiting anglers, and it has allowed the Essex County region to once again become a premier angling venue in the Northeast. Widely-regarded conservation organizations such as the American Fisheries Society and the New York State Conservation Council have recognized the efforts of Essex County in improving the fisheries resources of our area by honoring our Fisheries Department with some of their most prestigious awards.

The Essex County Fish Hatchery, located in historic Crown Point, raises three species of trout - rainbow, brown, and brook. In addition to our two-year olds, our facility also raises roughly 20,000 yearling brook trout annually. Our hatchery is open to the public and over a dozen rearing ponds, full of trout, are situated on-site for your viewing pleasure. Our well-manicured grounds offer a pleasant setting for a family outing or picnic, and educational tours for special school or community groups can be arranged by contacting us directly.

In the Adirondacks, the rainbow trout is a colorful, hearty and abundant breed. The size range of adult Adirondack rainbows is from 12 to 28 inches and 1 to 9 pounds. In cooler lakes and streams, rainbow trout can be found near the surface. The warmer the water, the deeper they will locate. Spawning occurs from August through April. Fishing season for this popular breed is from April to October. Tributaries to Lake Champlain are open year-round to the first barrier impassable by fish.

The colder the better for this breed of trout. Ideally, brook trout thrive in cold, clean waters like those in the Adirondacks; they can be found in many of the lakes and streams in the area. Adult sizes range from 10 to 20 inches and 1/2 to 5 pounds. Spawning occurs from September to December. A little more particular about their environment, brook trout are not as widely adaptable as rainbow trout but they are an excellent food and game fish and are native to Adirondack streams.

Preferring warmer temperatures and slower moving water, the brown trout can grow up to 18 inches in some Adirondack lakes. The brown trout spawns in the fall, and is known for its distinctive coloration and markings, possessing definite red spots on its sides. Eagle Lake in Ticonderoga is an example of a premier brown trout water.

There is probably no river in America that offers such diversity to the angler. Located in the High Peaks region, the legendary West Branch of the Au Sable River offers miles of pocket water, vast stretches of slow moving water, deep pools and long channels.

Stocking our waterways since 1982...
The Essex County Fisheries Department raises three species of trout: rainbow trout, brook trout and brown trout. In 1990, it began an exciting transition from yearling (7”-9”) production to two-year old (12”-14”) production. The Fish Hatchery, now releases approximately 30,000 two-year old as well as 20,000 one-year old trout annually, making it one of the most unique and ambitious stocking programs in the northeastern United States.
