Sure, the village’s namesake water has top-notch fishing for rainbow
trout and lake trout, as well as bass and panfish. And Mirror Lake, which
sits right at the edge of the village, is also a fine spot to catch rainbows
and lakers. Both lakes are a leisurely stroll from the many lodging properties
in the village.
But there’s so much more as well.
In fact, a stretch of the legendary Ausable River lies within the town
of North Elba boundaries, scenic water that attracts scores of flyfishermen
each year. And they’re not coming back because they got skunked
last time.
Then there are scenic spots like Connery Pond, a great place to go even
if the fish aren’t biting. But with plenty of splake and trout cruising
the depths, action is usually fast and furious.
Just up the road, bass fishermen flock to the Saranac Chain of Lakes,
where even the professionals were impressed during three years of the
ESPN Great Outdoor Games. The Saranacs also boast healthy populations
of pike, trout and panfish.
The Saranac Lake area, too, is the perfect place to launch a trip into
the St. Regis Canoe Area, a maze of lakes and ponds loaded with trout.
Moose Pond in the town of St. Armand is legendary for its trout and bass
fishing, and a section of the Saranac River – as popular with locals
as the Ausable – holds plenty of trout, many of them the kind that
end up on the wall.
Yes, Lake Placid fishing is about much more than Lake Placid.
