First Day Hike at Mt Van Hoevenberg

Start 2025 with a hike up Mt Van Hoevenberg

Join the NYS DEC for a hike on the MVHE Trail, up Mt Van Hoevenberg. Starting at the Olympic Sporting Complex, passing through the 1980 Bobsled Track and up the slopes of Mt Van Hoevenberg, you will experience one of the newest trails in the High Peaks Wilderness. At the ledges, you will be treated (with clear skies) to an almost 180-degree view of the tallest mountains in NYS. Mounts Marcy and Algonquin, along with many others, tower over South Meadow Brook. This hike is about 4 miles round trip.

  • Time: Arrive between 8:30am – 9:00am. Hike will start at 9:00am and will take between 2-3 hours to complete
  • Parking: Parking Lot B, Bobsled Lane, Lake Placid, NY 12946
  • Meet Up Location: Meet in front of the Lodge at Mt. Van Hoevenberg
  • Difficulty Level: The hike up Mt Van Hoevenberg from the Olympic Complex is along one of the newest trails in the High Peaks Region. The average grade of the trail is 10%, with some stone staircases and steps to hike. If there is low snow, the use of traction devices (such as micro spikes) will be appreciated for your confidence and safety. If there is more than 8" of snow, the use of snowshoes will be required.

Please come prepared for cold weather, have a pack, traction devices, and snowshoes. This hike will happen snow or shine! All ages welcome. Well-behaved pets are allowed on leash.
