"Summer Vacationland"

June 7, 1946-The Adirondack vacationland, with more than 2,150,000 acres of forest preserve, on which are found over 1,400 lakes and ponds, is once more welcoming visitors, who are expected in unusually large numbers during the summer, to avail themselves of recreational opportunities offered in the area.

Rich in historical associations, easy of access, providing accommodations from the Adirondack woods leanto to the most luxuriously equipped hotel, to suit a variety of tastes, this popular New York state playground has been put in order for travelers from every state in the Union, and from neighboring Canada. State campsites, cabin colonies, tourist homes, restaurants, tea rooms, and hotels are prepared to entertain comfortably thousands of people who were prevented during the war period from touring their native land.

From the Canadian border southward, mountains, lakes and streams, in age-old beauty, appeal to those seeking rest, recreation and renewed vigor. A vacation in the Adirondacks, be it long or short, is one to be remembered with satisfaction and to be repeated whenever possible.

Popular resorts in Essex county include: Schroon Lake, Hague-on-Lake George, Ticonderoga, Elk Lake, Elizabethtown, Westport, Essex, Keene Valley, Keene, Cascade, Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Wilmington, Willsboro Point, Port Douglas on Corlear Bay, Port Kent and Ausable Chasm. Information regarding accommodations and recreational facilities may be obtained from the Adirondack Resorts association. The N. Y. State Conservation Department distributes printed material with information about campsites, mountain trails, and sports centers. Lodges of the Adirondack Mountain Club are open during the season at Heart Lake (North Elba) and on John's Brook near Keene Valley, serving both club members and non-members. Numerous camps for boys and girls on Lake Champlain and smaller bodies of water, will give youngsters and teenagers a healthful and happy summer of outdoor life, in which work and play are well balanced.

*There is a great short film on You Tube called "Adirondack Holiday", from 1960.  It gives a quirky and nostalgic tour of the Adirondack region.
