The 2012 race is the 14th Annual Ironman Lake Placid event, which attracts over 2,800 athletes and requires 3,500 volunteers, including 80 captains who manage specific groups of volunteers. Two-thirds of the volunteers travel from outside the region to participate in the event.

At this year's captain's meeting, five of those captains were recognized for leading their groups for all 14 years of the Lake Placid event: Lee Ann Thomas, Volunteer Tent captain; Jim Grant, Lifeguard captain; Cora Clark, Medical Captain; Patty Bashaw, Ambulance Captain; and Jeff Herter, Boathouse Run Aid Station Captain.

Kathy Pfohl, who is the race Volunteer Director as part of her position as Director of Special Projects and Community Relations at the Lake Placid CVB, presented each of the fourteen-year tenured captains with commemorative trophies. "Tonight, we are celebrating these five outstanding leaders, and all of our captains," she said. "Your dedication and community spirit makes this event possible."

The Ironman Lake Placid event will be held Sunday, July 22. For local travel information during race day, pick up a Getting Around on Race Day Guide at the Lake Placid Visitors Center, or download a PDF version online at: www.ironmanlakeplacid.com.
