Hikes Through History at John Brown Farm

  • There is no charge for the tours, but donations to the Natural Heritage Trust will be used for improvements and programming at John Brown Farm.

John Brown Farm State Historic Site in Lake Placid presents Hikes Through History, a summer series of guided walking tours.

The first hike will start at 10:30 a.m. at the Heaven Hill Trails on the upper end of Bear Cub Lane, on land owned by the Henry and Mildred Uihlein Foundation. The 1.4-mile Old Orchard Loop overlooks neighboring land once farmed by Black and white settlers of the mid-19th century, some later purchased by Lake Placid benefactors Henry and Mildred Uihlein, for whom Elderwood of Uihlein and Mid’s Park are named. The Uihleins also donated land to Cornell University for a maple research station and a seed potato farm and lab. All these topics are up for discussion on this walk. Call 518-806-9719 for more information and to sign up.

There are at least three more hikes planned:

¯ The Tablelands hike on Friday, July 21 will follow the Potato Field Loop starting at John Brown Farm. It will be a little more challenging, at 2 miles long with a 200-foot elevation gain.

¯ The North Elba Cemetery Tour on Saturday, Aug. 12 will be shorter and entirely flat¯ A hike on the Old Mountain Road is planned for Thursday, Aug. 17, possibly to be repeated late in September. It will proceed from the Lake Placid end of the Jackrabbit Trail off Mountain Lane to the height of land, then return. This is part of the route John Brown took on first visiting the Adirondacks, and the route his wife Mary traveled with his casket to bring him to his final resting place on his farm.
