Solar Eclipse Viewing Party at the Oval
The Olympic Center will host a free viewing party on April 8 for the 2024 Solar Eclipse on the James C. Sheffield Speed Skating Oval (conditions permitting). Gates open at 1 p.m. before the 2:13 p.m. start of the eclipse in Lake Placid, NY. The Oval offers an open south by southwest facing view of the Adirondack High Peaks and the iconic Olympic Ski Jumps, with room for many spectators to gather and watch the entirety of the solar eclipse from start to finish. Spectators can also enjoy onsite food and music.
Before the eclipse, check out Eclipse the House events happening in the Olympic Center. A livestream of the eclipse will also be available on the jumbotron in the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena from 2-5 p.m.
The Roamers Patio Deck overlooking the Oval will also be open for viewing the eclipse. The Deck offers a limited view and limited capacity.
Oval Eclipse Schedule
- 1:00 p.m. – Main Street Gates Open at the James C. Sheffield Speed Skating Oval
- 2:13 p.m. – Solar Eclipse begins
- 3:25 p.m. – Totality is reached and will last for over 3 minutes
- 3:28 p.m. – Totality ends
- 4:36 p.m. – Solar Eclipse ends
View Safely
Complimentary safety eclipse glasses will be provided as supplies last.
Remember: Looking directly at the eclipse without proper eye protection is never safe. Eclipse glasses are NOT regular sunglasses; no matter how dark, are not safe for viewing the sun. Viewing any part of the bright sun through a camera lens, binoculars, or a telescope without a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics will instantly cause severe eye injury.
