It's Friday evening and, once again, I find myself in the historic town of Essex on the shore of Lake Champlain. Tonight I'm here for Essex Theatre Company's opening night of the musical "Godspell."

This is a first for me. I have never seen this musical performed on stage before, so I am quite excited.

As we crowd into the Masonic Lodge—which is right next to the ferry dock—I take note of the set. The show was originally produced in the '70s and the set reflects a '70s motif, with tie-dyed sheets, graffiti, and peace signs. The on-stage percussionist's music stand is even covered with a tie-dyed cloth. I'm a sucker for details like this.

Even if you're not familiar with the show, you've probably heard one or two the songs, like "Day by Day" and "All for the Best." The book is based on "The Gospel of St. Matthew," so the plot comes as no surprise.

Some of the parables that this troupe of actors brings to life tonight include the parable of the Tax Collector, the Good Samaritan, Lazarus, and the Prodigal Son. It's an enchanting way to present the parables which are interspersed with uplifting music by Stephen Schwartz (composer of "Pippin" and "Wicked"). I am blown away by Elizabeth Abair's "Bless the Lord My Soul" and moved by Matt Rock's "All Good Gifts."

There are plenty of elements of vaudeville in this performance as well as what I consider Groucho-Marx-like moments. One stand-out is Jason Amrhein whose portrayal of various Bible characters is especially gregarious and hilarious.

Act Two takes a more serious tone, as it inevitably must, but the "Long Live God" finale sends us all away in an uplifted state.

Director Antonette Knoedl, who also choreographed the show, utilizes the space very well and makes some lovely creative choices throughout the performance.

It's a great show for all ages and the music is infectious.
