With the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup rolling into Lake Placid from September 27-29, 2024, there's no better time to grab your friends and explore the diverse and thrilling trails this region has to offer. Nestled in the heart of the Adirondacks, Lake Placid is a haven for mountain biking enthusiasts, with trails that cater to all skill levels and preferences. If you're visiting for the UCI event and craving some epic riding beyond the race course, here are five must-visit mountain biking areas that will surely enhance your adventure, both in Lake Placid and in our neighboring communities!
1. Craig Wood Trails - Lake Placid
The Craig Wood Trails, located in Lake Placid, are a local favorite for their machine-built, well-maintained paths, and technical variety. The network here is extensive, featuring a combination of smooth, flowing trails and more challenging, rocky sections. Whether you're in the mood for a quick ride or a longer exploration, these trails offer a fantastic experience with easy access from the heart of Lake Placid. The variety and condition of the trails make it a great spot for both casual riders and serious bikers. Barkeater Trails Alliance (BETA), the Adirondack organization that builds, maintains, and advocates for mountain biking trails, recommends climbing on the Back Nine trail, which merges into 19th Hole, for a fun and flowing downhill!
2. Mount Pisgah Recreation Center - Saranac Lake
For an unforgettable ride with breathtaking views, the Mount Pisgah Recreation Center should be at the top of your list. Located just a short drive from Lake Placid (or 9 mile bike on the Adirondack Rail Trail!), this trail system offers a mix of technical singletrack and scenic routes. The trail network here is designed to challenge riders with its rolling terrain and varied difficulty levels, ensuring a satisfying experience for all. The highlight is the summit trail, which rewards riders with panoramic views of the surrounding Adirondack peaks and bodies of water, all from one of the most beloved community ski hills in the Park.
3. East Branch Community Trails - Keene
Another gem near Lake Placid, the East Branch Community Trails in Keene offer a welcoming environment for bikers of all skill levels. The trails, which are newer to the area, are designed with community enjoyment in mind, featuring a variety of routes that wind through picturesque forests and alongside serene streams. This network is particularly great for families and those looking to enjoy a more leisurely ride amidst the stunning natural beauty of the region. The new trail system is a work in progress, and riding here can help spread the word, and bring funding to its future additions (a pump track and additional trails).
4. Hardy Road & Beaver Brook Trails - Wilmington
For those seeking a bit more adventure, the Hardy Road and Beaver Brook Trails in the Whiteface Region offer rugged terrain and exciting challenges. This area is known for its more technical trails, featuring rocky ascents and fast descents that will test your skills and thrill your senses. Luckily, there are some fun warm-up trails to take, and can make for a good family outing! The trails here are less groomed than some others, providing a more raw and adventurous mountain biking experience. Fun fact, this is the first mountain biking specific trail system built in the entire Adirondack Park!
5. Blueberry Hill Trails - Elizabethtown
Blueberry Hill Trails offer a unique and scenic biking experience. This area is perfect for those who enjoy a mix of challenging climbs and rewarding descents, all while surrounded by the beauty of the Lake Champlain Region AND the taller mountains of the central Adirondacks. The trails here are well-marked and provide a great balance between technical sections and more relaxed, flowy parts. It’s an ideal spot for a day trip or a peaceful ride amidst nature. The summit views and rocky outcroppings you can reach via bike here are almost unparalleled, and you’ll be wanting to stop and grab some photos of the views. If you’re an experienced rider, don’t miss the summit climb to the Blueberry Hill lean-to!
