Pitchoff - North Face

  • Old Mountain Road, Lake Placid

This quiet, remote, and exposed area provides some of the best and most scenic moderate ice climbing in the Adirondacks. This area has a relatively long season, which can be attributed to its northern exposure.

By the numbers

The area can be seen from the trail, approximately 30-45 minutes into your approach. Most routes are WI3 to WI4, with some WI5.

Ice climbing

Located high above the trail, the North Face of Pitchoff offers incredible views throughout the season. Due to its exposed nature, however, it can be quite chilly, particularly in the early season. Don't forget to pack extra layers, and be prepared.

The majority of routes on the North Face of Pitchoff are single pitch, with some multipitch routes around the area. The photos above are from the area's Mountain Project page. For more detailed route descriptions, that page can be found here.

How to get there

From Lake Placid, head south on Rt. 73. Take a left on Old Mountain Rd. towards the small parking area at the Jackrabbit ski trail trailhead. If you pass the Mt Van Hoevenberg Olympic Sports Complex on your right, you have gone too far. Snowshoes or skis are required for the approach on the Jackrabbit Trail anytime there are eight or more inches of snow.
