Few things make us think of summer more than the weekly mini-triathlon series sponsored by High Peaks Cyclery.  Every Monday throughout the summer first-time and veteran triathletes alike toe the starting line at Mirror Lake Beach at 6:30.  At the sound of High Peaks Cyclery's owner, Brian Delaney's megaphone participants embark on a 400-yard swim, 12-mile bike, and 3 mile run on some of Lake Placid's finest terrain.

According to Lou Reuter's article in the Adiorndack Daily Enterprise on Tuesday June 25, this year is the 29th year of High Peaks Cyclery's weekly triathlon series.  The event provides an opportunity for anyone to try the sport of triathlon in a fun and relaxed setting.  For veterans, the weekly event can be a place to practice lightining fast transitions and push themselves to reach the infamous benchmark of finishing the course in less than one hour.  Participating as a team in the "Mini" is a great way to experience the event without having to tackle that one triathlon leg that you absolutely can not see yourself doing.

The unsung heroes of the event are the volunteers who show up week after week do to the timing, mark numbers, and marshall the roads.  Participants are always greeted with a smile, and it seems that the folks helping to organize the event each week simply wouldn't have it any other way.   Without these dedicated indviduals there would be no mini-tri, and if you're ever out there competing make sure you say thank you.

The contribution that the weekly event has made to the culture of Lake Placid is undeniable.  The weekly triathlon series along with the Tin-Man in Tupper Lake, and that little event called Ironman that takes place at the end of July each year all come together to make Lake Placid and its surrounding area a type of triathlon "mecca."  The annual pilgrimage of triathletes and their families to the area each spring and summer creates a positive atmosphere in town that helps to make Lake Placid the wonderful place that it is.  If you're in Lake Placid on a Monday evening stop by Mirror Lake Beach around 6:30 and see what it's all about.  Or better yet, show up with a bike, sneakers, and swim suit to try it for yourself.
