With two feet of snow at Whiteface Mountain, there has to be a good reason to keep my family indoors. While visiting the Adirondacks, the Lake Placid Center for the Arts lures us off the slopes and nurtures the creative side of our brain. Since we all need balance we find it there with its many winter offerings.

Founded in 1972, the Lake Placid Center for the Arts (LPCA) brings the arts: visual, performing and musical, to the area with a wide array of talent ranging from YoYo Ma to Alvin Ailey II. The LPCA also guides the next generation of artist by providing a range a family-friendly events to entertain people of any age.

For families visiting Lake Placid, the after school workshops are certainly worth looking into. Though the activities are first offered to members and regional children, available space is then given on a first come-first serve basis.

Currently running is the Winter Film Series and new to the LPCA is "National Theatre Live" in HD, which allows participants to enjoy this year's productions of King Lear, Frankenstein or The Cherry Orchard from the comfort of the Adirondacks.

For an older set will be Pendragon Theatre's performance of Completely Hollywood (abridged) opening February 11. The comedy trio condenses 186 Hollywood films into vignettes, cliques and physical comedy.

Pendragon Theatre returns with the popular event, "Play with Your Food" on March 13, an opportunity for people to show their support for the arts while enjoying a tasty meal. The appetizers and beverages are the perfect accoutrement to the staged play reading.

Catch the Irish spirit of the Glengarry Bhoys on March 18 and dance Ball in the House will be coming on March 25th and bringing its a cappella magic to the stage in a performance set for all ages. The five-member band has been seen on the "Today Show" and is the voice behind the Cool Whip commercials.

There is something for everyone from scheduled classes for someone with a lengthy stay to a meander through the LPCA's North Gallery. For families it is a welcome creative respite to exercise the other half of our creative spirit.
