There are so many places to go in the Adirondacks, six million acres of it. Even though we live close to a lot of the area attractions, the lovely thing about Lake Placid is its focus on public transportation. You do not need to have a car to get around.

The perfect commuter companion is the free Placid XPRSS trolley. That is correct. This trolley is free. This green trolley stops at various places from the Olympic Ski Jumps, Main Street, to the Price Chopper Shopping Plaza. It is such a convenient way to get around town that I just park our car at the first available spot. Call 518-523-2002 for any advanced necessary scheduling. Keep in mind that Placid XPRSS is wheelchair accessible and ADA compliant.

Want to go to Whiteface, the Olympic Mountain? Take the Mountain Valley Shuttle. This option offers public transportation with stops between Lake Placid, Elizabethtown, AuSable Forks, Wilmington and beyond. There are even connecting routes to the Clinton County Public Transportation and Franklin County Public Transportation. A commuter pass booklet offers the 11th ride for free. (Only available from the One Call Center.) Call for the latest updates and schedules.

If you are driving your car to Lake Placid, take a few winter steps to be ready for this new season. We always keep a winter "care package" in the back of our car. This care package is in addition to any standard emergency gear you already have in your car. The emergency kit you keep in your car should be there no matter if you are traveling to the Adirondacks or the grocery store.

Our car "care package" lets us go explore all the elements the Adirondacks have to offer. For winter we put in a few additional small fleece blankets, spare sets of hat/mitts, spare batteries for the car flashlight, hand warmers and whatever sports gear you use from snowshoes to a sled. Our car usually looks like a gearshop. I want to make sure I can pull off the road at a moment's notice and go for a nice winter snowshoe or climb, no matter the time of day.

Be safe and have fun!
